Kathmandu-0, Budhanilkantha Municipality, Kathmandu, Bagmati Pradesh01-4370355
Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is a protected area located on the northern fringe of the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. Established in 2002, it covers about 159 square kilometers and serves as one of the most important green belts near the capital city, offering a quick escape into nature.
The park is named after two prominent areas within its boundary—Shivapuri Peak (2,732 meters) and Nagarjun Forest (also known as Jamacho). It lies across Kathmandu, Nuwakot, and Sindhupalchok districts and is a crucial watershed region supplying clean water to the Kathmandu Valley.
One of its most popular hiking destinations is the Nagarjun Jamacho viewpoint, which offers panoramic views of the Kathmandu Valley and surrounding Himalayan ranges on clear days. Shivapuri Peak is another major trekking spot, attracting hikers looking for a moderate challenge combined with scenic forest trails.
The park is rich in biodiversity. It is home to a wide variety of flora including oak, rhododendron, pine, and bamboo forests. Wildlife species include the leopard, Himalayan black bear, wild boar, barking deer, and several species of monkeys. Birdlife is especially diverse, with over 300 recorded species, making it a popular destination for birdwatchers.
Culturally and spiritually, the park also holds significance. Several monasteries, meditation caves, and religious sites are scattered throughout, reflecting its importance for Buddhist monks and Hindu pilgrims. The tranquil environment makes it a popular place for meditation and spiritual retreats.
The climate varies with altitude, ranging from subtropical conditions at lower elevations to cooler temperate climates in higher areas. The best time to visit is generally from October to April, when the weather is clear and ideal for hiking.
Visitors can access the park through multiple entry points, including Budhanilkantha, Sundarijal, and Nagarjun. Entry requires permits, and guided tours are available for those who want a more structured experience.
Overall, Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park is a unique blend of natural beauty, biodiversity, and cultural heritage, making it one of the most accessible yet rewarding national parks in Nepal.
