Shey Phoksundo National Park

Shey Phoksundo National Park is Nepal’s largest national park and one of its most remote and least explored protected areas. Established in 1984, it covers about 3,555 square kilometers in the trans-Himalayan region of Dolpa and Mugu districts. The park is famous for its dramatic landscapes, ranging from lush river valleys and pine forests to arid high-altitude plateaus that resemble Tibetan terrain.

Culturally, the area is just as fascinating as its natural beauty. The park is home to traditional Tibetan-influenced communities who follow Bon and Buddhist traditions. One important spiritual site is Shey Gompa, an ancient monastery that holds deep religious significance and hosts the Shey Festival every 12 years.

The climate varies greatly depending on altitude. Lower regions experience milder conditions with forests and rivers, while higher areas are dry, cold, and windy due to the rain shadow effect of the Himalayas. The best time to visit is typically from April to October, when weather conditions are more favorable for trekking.

Access to the park is challenging, which helps preserve its untouched beauty. Most journeys begin with flights to Juphal followed by several days of trekking. Because of its remoteness, facilities are basic, and visitors should be prepared for limited infrastructure.
