National Human Rights Commission - Koshi

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) of Nepal is established as an independent and autonomous body by Article 248 of the Constitution of Nepal 2072. The committees of the House of Representatives provide guidance for the monitoring and assessment of activities of all constitutional bodies except the NHRC. The NHRC has its central office, provincial offices in all seven provinces, and branch offices in three provinces to ensure accessibility for citizens and to carry out human rights-related activities effectively.

The NHRC's regional office in Biratnagar was established on Magh 26, 2061 BS, aiming to provide easy access to the commission's services. The establishment coincided with Nepal's transition to a federal democratic republic under the Constitution of 2072. The NHRC structure was modified in line with the federal system as per the National Human Rights Commission Act of 2068. Following the commission's recommendation, the Government of Nepal renamed the provincial offices, and thus, the office was renamed as the Province Office, Biratnagar, to reflect the federal structure.

The Province Office, Biratnagar, continuously advances its work in research and investigation focusing on human rights issues. It disseminates comprehensive information on human rights through press releases, conferences, and other means. The office's findings and reports on human rights are communicated to the public, serving both service recipients and the general public by highlighting the status and situation of human rights in the province.
