Arghakhanchi District is a hilly district in Lumbini Province, Nepal, with its headquarters in Sandhikharka. It covers an area of about 1,193 km² and had a population of around 177,000 as of the 2021 census. The district is bordered by Palpa, Gulmi, Kapilvastu, and Pyuthan, and much of its terrain lies in the Mahabharat Range. Historically, it was formed by merging two principalities, Argha and
Khanchi, during Nepal’s unification in 1786, and later became a separate district in 1961.
Demographically, Arghakhanchi is diverse but predominantly Hindu (98%). The major ethnic groups include Bahun (28.8%), Magar (19.6%), and Chhetri (18.1%), with Nepali being the dominant language spoken by over 96% of the population. The district has a literacy rate of about 80.85% and a higher female-to-male ratio. Administratively, it consists of six municipalities - three urban (Sandhikharka, Sitganga, Bhumikasthan) and three rural (Chhatradev, Panini, Malarani). The region is rich in rivers, lakes, and forests, with elevations ranging from 305 to 2,575 meters above sea level
