Kathmandu District Court

Kathmandu-0, Kathmandu Metropolitian City, Kathmandu, Bagmati Pradesh
01-4257178

Kathmandu District Court, established in 2021 B.S. (1964 A.D.), is the principal judicial authority of Nepal’s capital, handling both civil and criminal cases with transparency and fairness.

The Kathmandu District Court has a rich history dating back to the era of Prime Minister Jung Bahadur Rana, when judicial functions were divided between Kathmandu East and West divisions. Later, with the establishment of the Bhardari Adalat in 1962 B.S., these divisions evolved into the Capital Kathmandu Criminal Court and the Capital Kathmandu Civil Court. In 1963 B.S., several judicial bodies were centralized in Dillibazar, a place famously known as Char Khal because four courts operated together there. Finally, on Falgun 7, 2021 B.S., the institution was formally named Kathmandu District Court, continuing its role as a cornerstone of Nepal’s judiciary.

Today, the court is located in Babarmahal, Kathmandu, serving millions of residents and foreigners in the capital. It functions as a trial court under the Supreme Court of Nepal, resolving disputes related to property, family matters, financial transactions, and criminal offenses. Beyond adjudication, the court emphasizes public trust, transparency, and accessibility, publishing case lists, judgments, and notices to keep citizens informed. As one of the busiest courts in the country, Kathmandu District Court plays a vital role in safeguarding rights and strengthening the rule of law in Nepal’s most populous district.
