Chitwan National Park is Nepal’s first national park, established in 1973 in the subtropical lowlands of the Terai region. Covering about 952 square kilometers, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1984 due to its outstanding biodiversity and conservation value.

Located in south-central Nepal, the park features a diverse landscape of dense sal forests, grasslands, riverine ecosystems, and the Churia Hills. Major rivers such as the Narayani and Rapti form natural boundaries and support a rich variety of habitats, making the park one of the best-preserved ecosystems in the Terai region.

Chitwan National Park is globally famous for its wildlife, including the endangered one-horned rhinoceros and the Bengal tiger, along with hundreds of other species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and fish. The park hosts more than 700 wildlife species and over 500 bird species, making it a specific destination for nature lovers and researchers.

The area also represents one of the last remaining examples of natural Terai ecosystems, with a mix of subtropical forests and alluvial grasslands. Its ecological importance, scenic beauty, and successful conservation efforts have made it one of Nepal’s most popular tourism destinations.
